Let's talk about trash. We know, no one wants to talk about trash. Or be near trash. It's gross, right?
Our planet thinks so, too. According to Earth Day, trash negatively impacts climate change, our wildlife, and our public health. In 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency calculated that the total generation of municipal solid waste in the United States just that year was 267.8 million tons. WOW!
While it feels like a big problem, we are here to tell you that there ARE simple ways that you can reduce your carbon footprint and become a part of the solution for our planet. From composting to reducing use of plastic, there are many ways to become a part of the trash solution.
Let's talk about 5 simple ways to reduce trash waste in your home...
1. Ditch the plastic bags
Ditch the plastic bags and start using your own reusable bags. You can find reusable bags for sale at most grocery stores. Pro Tip: Keep bags in your trunk or by your door, so that you never forget them when you're heading to the store.
2. Learn what can be recycled in your area
Whether you are using a recycling bin, or just stuffing recyclables in a paper bag from Whole Foods, it can be easy to take care of recyclable items. Take a look at the EPA's website to learn what can be recycled in your area.
3. Compost your food waste
Think about all of the food that you throw out everyday. By simply throwing it in a compost bin instead of plastic garbage bags, you can ensure that it's returned to our earth instead of our landfills. You can compost yourself at home, or have us help you do it. (We'd love to!)
4. Use reusable water bottles
This one feels like a no brainer. With all of the cool designs out there, there's no reason to use and discard plastic waterbottles. We love this waterbottle that helps you track how much you're drinking.
5. Make a meal plan
By making a meal plan, you'll produce less food waste and won't collect a pile of takeaway food containers that you have to throw in the trash. Plus, who doesn't love trying new recipes or making your own delicious vegan food? If you are having a hard time with this one and are still throwing away food, don't worry, we can help you with that.
